What Preventative Maintenance And Cleanliness Measures Are Important In Concrete Batch Plants?

In order to have an effective manufacturing and delivery process for concrete, all concrete plants must be working in an efficient and clean condition. For this to be achievable, checklists are created and used by the personnel in the batching plant.

The checklists include tasks that should be performed daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly, and they should be prepared in a way that the cover the basic components of ready to mix concrete batching plants. These components include:

Handling and storing equipment
Mixing and batching(dosificadora) equipment
Mixer and Agitator (transporting equipment)

Weekly Tasks On The Checklist For Handling And Storing Equipment

One of the first tasks that should be completed every week is inspecting the area under the batching plants for any spills. If any spills are detected, the source of the spill should be traced.

All of the drains and traps should be inspected, and they should be clear. During this inspection, make sure the yard is clean.

The settlement pits, the recyclers and the wash down areas should all be inspected and maintained(inspeccionado y mantenido). Note if these areas are in efficient working order.

All doors and storage bins should be checked to make sure they are working properly.

Boom scrapers, conveyors and bucket elevators should be checked weekly free running and wear. Make any necessary adjustments during this time.

There should be weekly servicing and routine checks performed on loading shovels.

Daily Checks For Mixing And Batching Equipment

There are three daily checks for preventative maintenance with this type of equipment.

The tare weights should be inspected and adjusted, and the weigh dials should be clean if needed.

Each day, the weighing hoppers should be checked to ensure they are emptying properly.

Finally, the washout central mixer pan or drum should be inspected every day.

There are also weekly checks that must be performed on mixing and batching equipment to prevent issues from occurring later on.

Every week, the central mixer paddles, arms and blades should be checked and cleaned. These components must always be in working order.

All concrete or cement build up must be removed weekly.

Be sure that all doors and hoppers are in efficient and clean working order.

Inspect and clean the cement silo filter sock and ensure it is in working order.

Each week, the dust seals on the hoppers must be inspected for wear and tear.

Every week, the calibration of moisture meter must be inspected if needed.

During the weekly inspection, the water traps on the air lines must be drained.

With the batching and mixing equipment(equipo de mezcla), there are also preventative and cleanliness tasks that should be performed each month. All of these tasks are related to calibrating different components such as:

Calibrating the weigh scales
Calibrating the water meter
Calibrating the admixture dispenser

There are also two tasks that should be completed three to four times a year to ensure the equipment is cleaned and well-maintained. These tasks are:

Testing and inspecting all weigh scales over their complete range of operation
Oil changes to oil baths and gearboxes

It is important to make sure a checklist is created and followed by plant personnel. It is these checklists that will allow staff to catch issues early before they become much larger problems.
